Richard Holt, MD, MPH, D Bioethics

Dr. Holt is Professor Emeritus and Founding Chair, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and Associate Professor of Clinical and Applied Science Education at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Medicine. He is an Adjunct Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. Dr. Holt holds advanced degrees in engineering, public health and aerospace medicine, bioethics, and health policy. Dr. Holt has studied theology and Christian ethics at the graduate level at the Austin Theological Seminary. His clinical and research interests have been in trauma and cancer reconstruction, osseo-integrated implants, laryngology, congenital facial anomalies, global health and international medicine, aviation and space medicine, and bioethics. He served for over 30 years as a head and neck surgeon and flight surgeon in the military, including two deployments and assignments with space command and special operations.

Dr. Holt has been editor-in-chief of three previous journals - Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine; and the Southern Medical Journal, and is currently editor-in-chief of The Permanente Journal (of medicine) and associate editor of the Military Medicine journal. He has served as president of two national specialty societies, co-edited/co-authored four textbooks, and contributed over two hundred book chapters and journal articles to the medical and scientific literature.

Dr. Holt has taught medical students and resident physicians for 50 years in anatomy and its clinical correlations, neuroscience and neurophysiology, surgical techniques, head and neck examination, physician professionalism, and bioethics. He hopes to have the opportunity at UIW SOM to further learning in professionalism and bioethics, as well as in the clinical sciences.
