Patrick Muehlberger, MD

Dr. Muehlberger is a part-time clinical DOCS faculty member. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Muehlberger graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1989 with a B.S. in Physics. He served as a U.S. Air Force pilot from 1989-1996. In 1996, he matriculated to the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences for medical school. Dr. Muehlberger graduated from the Wright Patterson AFB/Wright State University’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program in 2003. His first assignment after residency was as Medical Director and Element Chief for the Emergency Department (ED) at Yokota AFB, Japan. In 2005, Dr. Muehlberger was transferred to the United States Air Force Academy, where he was the ED Flight Commander and Medical Director. Dr. Muehlberger deployed as a Critical Care Air Transport Team physician to Iraq and Afghanistan in 2006, evacuating the most critically wounded during one of the highest casualty periods of the Iraq War. In 2008, he was transferred to Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, TX, where he served until his retirement in 2013. During that tour, Dr. Muehlberger served as Squadron Commander with responsibility for the Air Force’s largest Emergency Department, Urgent Care Center, and Emergency Medical Services, as well as Family Health, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Women’s Health clinics. He deployed with the United States Special Operations Command to Iraq in 2009 and Afghanistan in 2011. Dr. Muehlberger’s military awards include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Medal.

Dr. Muehlberger has served as an Assistant Professor at UT Health San Antonio and the Uniformed Services University. Dr. Muehlberger works as a part-time contract physician at San Antonio Military Medical Center ED and is a clinical faculty member of the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium Emergency Medicine Residency. He is a founding member of, and works clinically at, Full Spectrum, a local private free-standing ED group with locations at Hardy Oak and the Rim.

Dr. Muehlberger joined the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) School of Osteopathic Medicine as a part-time faculty member and Assistant Professor in 2019. In 2024 UIW awarded him the Edward Zlotkowski Faculty Award for Service Learning for his work with students and residents during Street Medicine rounds, providing care to the unsheltered on the streets of the Alamo City. Dr. Muehlberger serves as President of San Antonio Street Medicine and has participated in medical missions to Mozambique and Guatemala. He serves in the first aid and children’s ministries at his church. Dr. Muehlberger is an active member of F3 Alamo men’s fitness group. Dr. Muehlberger is married and has three sons.
