Robert C. Allen, DO, FACEP
Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine Clinical and Applied Science Education Email: rcallen@uiwtx.eduDr. Rob Allen is a native Californian who has lived in Texas since 2001. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Irvine (Biological Sciences and Chemistry), and attended medical school at Western University of the Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific on an Air Force scholarship. After graduating, he served a rotating Internship at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan, then went on active duty in the Air Force.
After four years as a flight surgeon at Edwards AFB, Dr. Allen came to San Antonio for his Emergency Medicine Residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center/Brooke Army Medical Center. After Residency and a tour as the Vice Chair of the Emergency Department at Malcom Grow USAF Medical Center, Dr. Allen returned to operational medicine, and spent eight years as the head physician for USAF Special Tactics. He then returned to San Antonio to teach Aeromedical Evacuation, Critical Care Air Transport and Combat/Deployment Medicine at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. He retired from the Air Force in 2006 and worked for the Department of Energy in Nevada. In 2008, he returned to the School of Aerospace Medicine until it moved to Wright-Patterson AFB in 2011. He retired (again) in 2011 and practiced Emergency Medicine part-time until being recruited to teach at UIWSOM. In his years of clinical practice, Dr. Allen has been able to practice medicine on five Continents (he's still working on getting to Australia and Antarctica).
Dr. Allen has been with University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine since 2017. His medical interests include Wilderness Medicine, Operational/Tactical Medicine and Disaster Medicine. He and his wife, Diane (a Forensic Chemist) have two grown children, both of whom are Analytical Chemists. When not working, Dr. Allen is usually trying to find new places to go hiking, and warm, clear water to go diving.
