Dr. Martin Timoney is the Assistant Professor of Medical Education and Career Development at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), where he has served since 2019. He first joined UIWSOM as a Career Counselor before being appointed Director of Residency Advising in 2022 and later to his current faculty role in 2025. His work centers on supporting students in their specialty exploration, professional development and residency application process.
Dr. Timoney is originally from County Donegal in northwest Ireland. He completed his undergraduate studies in philosophy and theology at the Pontifical University, St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in Theology from Catholic International University in West Virginia, a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University in Minnesota, and a Doctor of Education in Community Care and Counseling from Liberty University in Virginia. His doctoral dissertation was titled Identifying the Core Components of Christian Humility. During his counseling training, he was inducted into Chi Sigma Iota, served as Vice-President and President of Walden University’s chapter, and developed a strong foundation in counseling practice and student support.
Before joining UIWSOM, Dr. Timoney focused on completing his graduate education while serving as a stay-at-home parent as his wife completed her pediatric residency and neonatology fellowship in the Army. Earlier in his life, he served as a priest in the Diocese of Raphoe in Ireland. His close connection to the osteopathic profession through his wife and late father-in-law has been a meaningful influence in his work with DO students.
At UIWSOM, Dr. Timoney oversees the residency advising curriculum and leads initiatives that guide students through the Match and their broader career development. He is committed to helping students navigate specialty choice, reflect on their strengths and enter residency with clarity and confidence. His scholarly interests include positive psychology, virtue and humility, strengths development, and the advancement of osteopathic medicine.
Dr. Timoney is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington, and a National Certified Counselor. He is also a member of the American Counseling Association.
