Dr. Whitney H. Mitchell is a board-certified psychiatrist and psychotherapist in New Braunfels, Texas. A Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with more than 20 years of experience, she specializes in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, trauma recovery, and issues related to sexuality, personality, and relationships. She provides both medication management and psychotherapy and is committed to evidence-based, individualized care. Fluent in Spanish, she works with patients from diverse backgrounds and is an ally of the LGBTQ+ community.

Dr. Mitchell graduated in three years from high school and spent her senior year as an exchange student in Argentina, where she developed an interest in Argentine folklore and culture. At Texas A&M University, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Genetics with a 4.0 GPA, receiving the Gathright Scholar Award, Academic Excellence Award, and the H.O. Kunkel Scholarship. While in college, she was active in public health education with AIDS Services of Brazos County, teaching sex education and STI prevention. She also maintained her passion for music, performing in a jazz/blues band and singing Argentine folklore before a live audience of 30,000 at the country’s largest folk festival.

She went on to complete her medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, graduating in the top 10% of her class. She was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and recognized with awards including the Fuller-Giffen Award for Clinical Excellence in Psychiatry, the Lozano-Long Award for Academic Excellence, and the American Association of Family Practice Program of Excellence Award for a community service project. During medical school, she was active in community health fairs and the Promotora Project, providing education on safe sex practices and prenatal care to underserved women in South San Antonio.

Dr. Mitchell completed her residency training in psychiatry at University Hospital, Audie Murphy VA Hospital, and Wilford Hall Medical Center. During residency, she served as Resident Class Representative for three years and was a member of both the curriculum committee and the ethical guidelines committee. Her training gave her broad experience in outpatient, inpatient, and consultation psychiatry.

Since 2009, Dr. Mitchell has been in private practice in New Braunfels, serving patients from across the Hill Country, San Antonio, and Austin areas. In addition to her clinical practice, she is the Associate Program Director at TIGMER, where she focuses on policy, procedures, and compliance, and contributes her expertise in psychotherapy to resident education.

Dr. Mitchell is also active in the community. She co-created the New Braunfels Science Education Foundation and founded the New Braunfels Science Fest, a free public event featuring more than 50 interactive science exhibits. For this work, she was recognized as a Pillar of the Community and received the Chamber of Commerce Award for Education. She has also been involved in Rotary Youth Exchange for many years, supporting inbound and outbound students, their families, and committees on matters of adjustment and mental health.

With a strong foundation in both psychiatry and psychotherapy, Dr. Mitchell continues to expand her knowledge in psychology, neuroscience, and related fields. She views her role as helping patients build lives of resilience, meaning, and improved mental health through collaborative and compassionate care.
