Chair of Primary Care Clinical and Applied Science Education Email: degarza2@uiwtx.eduFollowing 25 years as a solo family medicine physician in his hometown of Laredo, Texas, Dr. Garza now serves as Chair of Primary Care at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) in San Antonio.
Before transitioning to full-time faculty status in 2020, Dr. Garza helped establish the first GME and UME programs in Laredo. There he served as Founding Program Director for UIWSOM's Family Medicine Residency, assisted with the creation and staffing of an Internal Medicine Residency, then designed and directed a 12-month core clerkship program for third-year UIWSOM students. He earned a B.A. from UT Austin, his D.O. from UNTHSC-TCOM and a Master of Medical Education Leadership from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Garza served for seven years as a member of the Texas Medical Board, is Certified by the AOBFP and is a Distinguished Fellow of the ACOFP. A past president of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, Texas Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, TMF Health Quality Institute and the TCOM Alumni Association, Dr. Garza is Chairman of the Board for the TOMA Foundation and serves on the Board of Trustees for the American Osteopathic Association.
