Yumi Yaguchi is the Director of Library Services at the UIWSOM. Yaguchi conducts departmental planning and provides the direction of the overall SOM Library functions and operations. She is responsible for the management of the SOM Library collection and the provision of library services to the SOM learners, faculty, staff, and the UIW community.
Yaguchi has over 10 years of experience in academic health science librarianship. Previously, she served as the Knowledge Resource Development Librarian at Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) Library. She was responsible for lifecycle management of the HWCOM Medical Library's collections and resources in all formats, including development, implementation, assessment, license review and negotiation with vendors, procurement transaction, budget preparation, and data curation for the statistical reports. She conducted investigations and responses to inquiries from the HWCOM patrons regarding the current Medical Library resources as well as new resources available in the library market. Yaguchi also oversaw daily operations in the Cataloging Department.
Before working at FIU, Yaguchi served as the Assistant Director at the Harrington Library and as a Faculty Associate in the School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at Amarillo. She performed various functions from research service to collection development, community outreach, and supervision of the Serials, Acquisitions, and Interlibrary Loan Department. As a Faculty Associate of the School of Medicine, Yaguchi taught evidence-based medicine curriculum, both in the classroom and clinical settings.
Yaguchi earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Kinjo Gakuin University, Nagoya, Japan, and her Master of Science degree in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a Distinguished Level Member, Academy of Health Information Professional (AHIP), Medical Library Association. Her professional memberships include the Medical Library Association (MLA) and the South Central Chapter of MLA; American Library Association; Association for Library Collections and Technical Services. Yaguchi is a long-time Texas resident, and she is excited to be back in Texas and be a part of the UIWSOM.
