Roberto Fajardo, PhD

Professor, Department of Applied Biomedical Sciences Clinical and Applied Science Education

Dr. Fajardo teaches gross anatomy to first and second year osteopathic medical students at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), where he also chairs the Institutional Review Board and the Student Performance Committee. His research focuses on orthopedic health disparities, particularly outcomes for Hispanic and minority patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis, and on evidence-based conservative care. His recent review in Osteopathic Family Physician examines osteopathic manipulative treatment for knee osteoarthritis, and he is principal investigator of an American Osteopathic Association funded pilot randomized controlled trial comparing physical therapy alone with physical therapy plus osteopathic manipulative treatment.

He earned his PhD in Anthropological Sciences from Stony Brook University and spent seven years at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School as a postdoctoral fellow and instructor in orthopedic biomechanics. He then spent nine years in the Department of Orthopedics at UT Health San Antonio before joining UIWSOM in 2018.

Dr. Fajardo is Executive Director of Healing the Children Texas, which has led annual pediatric medical missions to Neiva, Colombia since 2005, giving UIWSOM learners hands-on global health experience. He also co-founded Amigos en Medicina, a free joint pain clinic serving San Antonio’s southside.
