Transition to UIW SOM

Welcome, Class of 2025!

Below are required activities to assist in your transition to the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIW SOM). Please be sure to complete these activities as they become available. All required activities must be completed by July 19, 2021. Please ensure that you have also completed the matriculation items on the Incoming Students page. Matriculation to UIW SOM is contingent on successful completion of these items in a timely manner.

Required

Each learner will be given a UIW SOM white coat and two sets of scrubs. The learner places the order but the cost is covered by UIW SOM. To purchase, contact Classic Uniforms at (210) 525-0200 or visit the store at 8507 N. McCullough, Suite B-3, San Antonio, Texas 78216. Please be sure to mention that you are a UIWSOM learner.

Assignment: Order your white coat and scrubs from Classic Uniforms.

Due Date: We want to ensure your white coats are properly prepared so you look as professional as possible. The priority deadline to order your white coat and scrub is July 1, 2021. We understand that this may not be possible for some learners, and accommodations will be made accordingly by Classic Uniforms for those unable to place their order prior to the deadline.

Prior to your arrival to the UIW SOM campus, the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs (OASA) needs to gather some information from you.  The collection of this information is so our staff may better serve you during your time at UIW SOM. The following information will be viewed by the OASA staff ONLY. Please answer all questions in full to the best of your ability. 

Assignment: Complete the Pre-Matricultation Survey via Microsoft Forms.

Deadline: Part of this survey includes gathering your preferred sizes for t-shirts and polos that will be distributed during orientation. Because orders need to be made in a timely manner we ask for you to complete the survey no later than July 5, 2021. However, we understand that this may not be possible for some learners. Extras will be ordered for learners that are unable to submit their sizing prior to the deadline.

Before beginning your journey with us we would like to learn a little bit more about you. We ask that you provide a short bio that includes the reason you decided to become a DO, why you chose to attend UIWSOM, and any interesting/personal information you wish to share. All bios will be shared with Dean Phillips-Madson, the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs (OASA). View examples of learner bios from previous years here. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Assignment: Submit your Incoming Learner Bio via Microsoft Forms. All bios submitted should be one to two paragraphs in length.

Due Date: These bios will be reviewed by Dean Madson prior to your small group meeting held with the Dean during the Fall semester. Because of this we ask all bios be submitted by  July 19, 2021.

Class of 2025 learners are required to read: Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning by Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger, III, and Mark A. McDaniel and complete a short reflection assignment. You can purchase this book online; borrow it through the SA Public Library or your local library; OR access the electronic version of this book through the UIW library once you have fully activated your UIW login.

Assignment: After reading the book, complete the Reflection Assignment.

Due Date: Because we will discuss themes and ideas presented in the book starting in Orientation, we would like you to complete both the reading and assignment by July 19, 2021. However, we understand that this may not be possible for some learners. The final deadline for completion will be announced at Orientation.

The following video will give important information for learners to have in the event that they may have to file a report or need to contact the Title IX office. The University takes all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously and is committed to providing information, education, resources, support, interim measures and clear direction to University of the Incarnate Word community members to prevent and address such conduct. The University will always attempt to respond to sexual misconduct that it knows or should know about in order to stop prohibited conduct, prevent the recurrence of any conduct of concern, prevent and/or eliminate any hostile environment, and, where appropriate, address any effects on campus from such prohibited conduct.

Assignment: Complete all Title IX modules. To learn how to access these modules please visit the UIW Title IX webpage.

Due Date: UIW takes seriously its responsibility to educate students on the prevention of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and alcohol/drug use. Therefore, you are required to complete online training to address those issues. Failure to complete this training will result in a registration hold being placed on your student account. All modules are to be completed by October 15, 2021.

At UIW SOM our learners are presented with many opportunities to have their photos captured at events or being requested for interviews. We wish to highlight our learners when possible, and require you to sign this Media Release Form in order to do so. 

Assignment: Sign the Media Consent and Release Form.

Due Date: We want to ensure all learners can be showcased properly. With that in mind, we ask you to sign the consent form prior to arriving on campus July 19, 2021.

The UIW Libraries actively participate in the life of the university with a focus on developing partnerships and services in support of teaching, learning, and scholarship. Through the use of co-curricular instructional methodologies, innovative approaches in support of scholarship and research, the use of technologies that enhance discovery and knowledge dissemination, as well as providing access to appropriate resources and knowledgeable staff, UIW Libraries help to advance intellectual and lifelong learning of students, faculty, and staff. The programs, services, and collections of the UIW Libraries reflect differing points of view, various cultures, and a global perspective. 

Assignment: Watch the video below to be introduced to the UIW SOM Library.

Due Date: This is important information to have prior to arriving to campus and because of this we ask you review the video prior to the first day of orientation. With that being said, please complete this training by July 19, 2021.

The UIW Police Department is a multi-service organization. The essence of the Police Mission is to provide effective support, public assistance at every opportunity and a safe environment through safety awareness and law enforcement. This presentation will provide insight on how to stay safe while you’re on campus. General information along with information specific to the Medical Campus.

Assignment: Review the campus safety presentation.

Deadline: This is important information to have prior to arriving to campus and because of this we ask you review the presentation prior to the first day of orientation. With that being said, please complete this training by July 19, 2021

T.O.U.C.H. is a national initiative of the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP), created to encourage osteopathic medical students to engage in community service to help expand the osteopathic ideals and principles to those unaware of our professional values. These videos from AACOM and your UIWSOM TOUCH Coordinator will tell you more about TOUCH, how to track your hours and much more.

Assignment: Watch all videos listed above. 

Deadline: We would like you to take advantage of TOUCH opportunities as soon as possible, and provide you an opportunity to ask questions regarding TOUCH during orientation. Microsoft Teams is a unified communication and collaboration platform that combines persistent workplace chat, video meetings, file storage and application integration. These videos from Microsoft Teams will tell you how to utilize all the tools that Teams has to offer.

Assignment: View the MS Teams video trainings.

Due Date: Because you are expected to utilize Teams starting in your first week of class, we would like you to complete the assignment by July 19, 2021.

Microsoft OneNote is a program for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration. It gathers users' notes, drawings, screen clippings, and audio commentaries. Notes can be shared with other OneNote users over the Internet or a network. These videos from Microsoft OneNote will teach you how to take full advantage of all the tools available within this program.

Assignment: View the MS OneNote video trainings.

Due Date: Because you are expected to utilize OneNote starting in your first week of class, we would like you to complete the assignment by July 19, 2021.

The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine operates four state-of-the-art facilities on the UIW Medical Campus at Brooks. These buildings formerly comprised the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. All buildings are ADA compliant, accessible by secure key cards, and have ample wireless internet capability. In total, the buildings consist of approximately 155,000 square feet of educational and administrative space on 16 acres.
