Direct Admit Program

The Direct Admit option for first-time freshman students leads to a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. This unique program provides special academic and professional advising for UIW students, who, upon successful completion of their undergraduate degree, will matriculate to the UIWSOM. Once admitted to UIW as an undergraduate, students meeting the qualifications are invited to interview for the UIWSOM direct admit program.

Direct Admit Program Qualifications

  • Cumulative high school GPA of 3.7
  • Cumulative high school science and math GPAs of 3.7, each
  • Response to Direct Admit Program Supplemental Questions
  • Admission may require an interview with Direct Admit Admissions Committee members
  • Signed Memorandum of Understanding

The successful undergraduate applicant will qualify to enter this program upon admission to the University with specific criteria (Phase I). In order to retain membership in the program each year and be accepted into the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program, participants must satisfy additional requirements throughout their undergraduate program (Phase II). Our commitment to each student's success extends beyond the classroom. To provide the necessary guidance, each student will have at a minimum one meeting each semester with the Health Professions academic advisor to discuss the student's progress and planning.

Phase I Entrance Qualifications:

  • 3.7 High School Cumulative GPA / 3.7 High School Math / 3.7 High School Science
  • Response to Direct Admit Program Supplemental Questions
  • Admission may require an interview with Direct Admit Admissions Committee members
  • Signed Memorandum of Understanding 

Phase II Program Continuation Qualifications:

  1. Once enrolled full-time at UIW, all math and science courses must be completed at UIW. 
  2. Maintain an overall 3.5 GPA and a Math and Science GPA of 3.5 each academic year (fall, spring and summer). 
  3. Complete the following upper-level science courses determined by the program faculty to ensure readiness for medical school: 
    • Biochemistry I 
    • Advanced Human Physiology 
    • Microbiology
    • Cell Biology 
    • An additional upper-level science course approved by the Direct Admit Advisor (examples include neuroscience, immunology, genetics, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry II). 
  1. Follow all program requirements, completing required assignments related to the Direct Admit program and actively participate in all mandatory activities, including the seminar course. 
  2. Complete UIW community service requirements with a demonstrated focus on health education in the San Antonio community. 
  3. Uphold the UIW Student Code of Conduct. 
  4. Initiate and maintain contact with the UIW Direct Admit Advisor a minimum of one time each semester. 
  5. Actively participate in a minimum of one on-campus or community organization of your choice and submit a letter of recommendation from the leadership of that organization attesting to your leadership skills and character, prior to your Direct Admit interview at the UIWSOM. 
  6. Participate in 50 hours of health care related activities prior to graduation from UIW. 
  7. Complete a successful interview with the School of Osteopathic Medicine faculty in the spring prior to matriculation. 
  8. Complete the AACOMAS medical school application for data collection purposes, no later than January 31 of the year of matriculation at the UIWSOM. 
  9. Maintain enrollment for a minimum of 3.5 years. This is NOT an accelerated program. 
  10. All UIW graduates in the Direct Admit Program are expected to continue their studies at the UIWSOM.
