UIWSOM Hosts Inaugural Humanities in Healthcare Symposium
11/15/2024On Saturday, Nov. 9, UIW’s School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), in collaboration with the UIWSOM chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, hosted the inaugural Humanities in Healthcare Symposium. This first-time event welcomed approximately 70 community members and guests to hear from a variety of speakers as they discussed healthcare related topics such as professionalism, ethics, spirituality and humanism.
UIWSOM Attends Osteopathic Medical Education Conference 2024
09/27/2024The American Osteopathic Association hosted its annual Osteopathic Medical Education Conference, OMED, in San Antonio from Thursday, Sept. 19, through Sunday, Sept. 22. The event brought together thousands of osteopathic physicians, medical students and other health professionals from across the country, providing valuable networking opportunities and insights from guest speakers and leaders in the field of osteopathic medicine.
UIW Med Students Join “Walk with a Doc” Promoting Health and Wellness in Southside San Antonio

UIWSOM Hosts 160 Students at 2024 Health Professions Day Camp
06/12/2024On Monday, June 10, UIW’s School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) hosted its annual Health Professions Day Camp. UIW’s Health Professions Day Camp allows students to experience being part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team as they engage in analyzing medical case studies, clinical simulations, healthcare career exploration and health professions program admission advising.
100% of Eligible Students Match at UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine 2024 Match Day
03/22/2024On March 15, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) hosted its annual Match Day celebration, welcoming family and loved ones to support their soon-to-be doctors as they learned where they matched for residency. The school hosted its first Match Day in 2021 with 96% of students matching, followed by 2022 and 2023 with 99% of students matching both years. This year, 100% of the 139 eligible UIWSOM students matched into 16 different healthcare specialties.
UIWSOM's First-Generation Medical Student Alliance Hosts Mini-Med School Event for High School Students

UIWSOM Unveils New Campus Amenities to Help Students Combat Stress
07/06/2023Students of the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) have two new spaces to enjoy and utilize to promote their health and wellbeing – a gaming room and fitness center. The sounds of quarterbacks calling plays, and the enthusiastic clicking of controller buttons will now be common sounds in the student lounge on the UIWSOM campus. Last week these new spaces were officially opened by SOM leadership who proudly showcased the school’s new amenities.
UIWSOM Learners Celebrate Match Day Ceremony
03/24/2023It was a frigid Friday morning, but nothing could cool the excitement of the standing-room-only crowd of soon-to-be doctors, family and friends who gathered on March 17 for National Match Day. The group from the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) crowded together at the Hangar 9 event space on the Brooks campus to collectively share the good news about where they had “matched.”

UIWSOM Learner Hosts Vascular Surgery Workshop
02/09/2023Greg Williams, a second-year learner at UIWSOM, planned and held a anastomoses vascular surgery workshop for his fellow learners. Dr. Kevin Engledow, DO of UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) , led the workshop, while Le Maitre Vascular, a company dedicated to manufacturing devices to prevent or treat peripheral vascular disease, provided the supplies.

This is the question UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine learners Rachael Holtzman (second year), Deepti Akella (second year) and Jacqueline Danisi (fourth year) set out to research. They examined different factors that influence diverse applicants when applying to general surgery residency programs.
Servicio (Serving) through Amigos en Medicina Clinic
09/23/2022Yesenia Anaya, a second-year learner at the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), was one of the many students who participated in the third session of the Amigos en Medicina clinic on Saturday, Sept. 17. UIWSOM, along with the UIW School of Physical Therapy (SoPT), Ortho-SA and CHRISTUS Health, provide free hip and knee arthritis evaluations for Southside residents in San Antonio at each Amigos en Medicina clinic.
UIW and TLU Sign MOUs to Establish Health Professions Pathway for TLU Graduates
09/02/2022UIW and Texas Lutheran University (TLU) announced they have entered into a series of memorandums of understanding (MOU) as part of UIW’s Health Professions Pathway. The MOUs pave the way for TLU students to further their education in four different areas of health professions by reserving interview slots for qualified students to have an opportunity to attend the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine, the Feik School of Pharmacy, the Rosenberg School of Optometry, and the UIW School of Physical Therapy.
UIW Participates in Local Fair Addressing Health Disparities
07/15/2022Faculty and learners from the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) and the Cardinal Nursing and Wellness program participated in the Access Denied Health Fair on May 28. UIW supported the event by providing water and coffee to attendees. Additionally, Dr. Lyssa Ochoa, a preceptor for UIWSOM, and Dr. Jason Miller, program director for the UIWSOM Psychiatric Residency Program, served as members of a panel that facilitated discussions with individuals from the area.

06/16/2022In January, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), the UIW School of Physical Therapy (SoPT), Ortho-SA and CHRISTUS Health partnered to form Amigos en Medicina (AEM). Together they are providing free hip and knee arthritis evaluations for Southside residents in San Antonio. The second AEM clinic held in May partnered the UIWSOM, SoPT, Ortho-San Antonio, CHRISTUS Health and River City Produce to follow up with 12 patients, tracking their progress from the inaugural AEM clinic held in January.
UIW Receives Major Donation For Future Doctors
05/13/2022Robert Seddon made his latest contribution that will change the lives of UIW students and South Texans. A $100,000 gift brings the total of the Ingrid Seddon Endowed Scholarship in Osteopathic Medicine to $400,000. It is the largest endowed scholarship fund benefitting students at the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine.

UIW Receives Major Gift from Laredo Trust
02/14/2022UIW is proud to announce it has received an $85,000 donation for the Primary Care Residency Programs at the Laredo Medical Center. This latest gift from the Matias De Llano Charitable Trust brings the total donations from that trust to $415,000 since 2018. The International Bank of Commerce (IBC) in Laredo oversees the Matias De Llano Charitable Trust.

Rising from the Pandemic
01/19/2022Dr. Ronda Gottlieb, UIW director of Clinical Health, has been part of UIW’s team of first responders since the onset of the pandemic. As she recounts, “On Jan. 9, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a mysterious coronavirus-related pneumonia in Wuhan, China. At that point, cases were very low in China, but on January 20, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began screening for Coronavirus at three U.S. international airports. When the first confirmed U.S. case of COVID-19 was identified in Washington state, the UIW Incident Command team began officially meeting."

Q&A Spotlight: Dr. Robyn Phillips-Madson
10/14/2021Dr. Robyn Phillips-Madson, founding dean and professor of Family Medicine at the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine, was the recipient of this year’s Servant of Christ award, given by the San Antonio Christian Medical & Dental Association. Madson will be honored at the association’s 2021 fall banquet on Oct. 19.
UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine set to Launch First Mobile Medical Clinic
07/28/2021With the support of the Moody Foundation, the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) has launched a mobile medical clinic called the Mobile Osteopathic Medicine unit (MOM). The 29-foot vehicle will allow medical students and faculty to deliver services to the community including osteopathic primary care, immunizations, health screenings and more.
