Terence W. McGarvey, PhD

Associate Professor

Hello everyone, and thank you all for welcoming me to the University of the Incarnate Word and to San Antonio, Texas. I am looking forward to teaching Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, and Histology to the Biomedical Graduate students and the first crop of Medical students to the newest Osteopathic Medical School in Texas which also is faith based. I received my Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Neuroscience, and Anatomy from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University of Chicago, and was trained to teach Gross Anatomy, Histology, and Neuroanatomy. I then migrated to the Philadelphia area to do a post-doctoral fellowship on the molecular genetics of prostate cancer at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now Drexal University Medical School). I spent ten years doing research on the molecular biology of bladder cancer at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, also teaching part time. I finally returned to teach full time first to undergraduate premedical students Gross Anatomy, Histology, and Introductory Biology at Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA (the home of the Little League World Series). Before coming here for the last six years, I taught Gross Anatomy as an Associate Professor to Osteopathic Medical students at A.T. Still University, Kirksville, Missouri. However, I am now looking forward to teaching at the University of the Incarnate Word using newer student centered learning techniques. In addition, my research is now centered on understanding the role of vitamin K in the prevention of neuropathologies such as Alzheimer's disease.
