John LoCurto, JD
Assistant Professor
John J. LoCurto is the inaugural Assistant Professor of Medical Jurisprudence and Health Policy in the Department of Clinical and Applied Science Education at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine. He practiced law for 20 years, devoting most of his career to public service at the United States Department of Justice. John served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas here in San Antonio, where his practice focused on health care fraud, whistleblower and controlled substances cases. He rose through the ranks at the United States Attorney’s Office to become Deputy Chief of the Civil Division. In this role, he oversaw and coordinated the District's Affirmative Civil Enforcement, Civil Health Care Fraud and Civil Drug Diversion programs.
John joined UIWSOM in 2020. He teaches across the four-year osteopathic medical school curriculum and in UIWSOM’s graduate medical education, Master of Public Health and Master of Biomedical Sciences programs. In 2023, John received the Provost’s Legacy in Teaching Award from UIW and the Meritorious Service Award from the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association.
John earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law and his B.A. from the College of William & Mary. His interests include how the healthcare and justice systems interact; healthcare fraud, waste, and abuse; and bioethics.
John is married to his law school sweetheart. He and his wife have two kids, three rescue dogs and a rotating cast of foster animals.
