Assistant Professor, Clerkship Director

Involved with both undergraduate and graduate medical education, Dr. Garza serves as Director for the Family Medicine and Rural/Underserved Clerkships and Director of Osteopathic Recognition for the school’s residency programs. Before transitioning to the medical campus in 2020, Dr. Garza was Founding Program Director for UIWSOM’s Family Medicine Residency in his hometown of Laredo, Texas and was in solo practice there for twenty-five years prior to that. He earned a B.A. from UT Austin, his D.O. from UNTHSCTCOM and a Master of Medical Education Leadership from UNECOM.

Board Certified in Family Medicine, Dr. Garza is a Fellow of the ACOFP and AAFP. A past president of TOMA, Texas ACOFP, TMF Health Quality Institute and the TCOM Alumni Association, Dr. Garza served for seven years on Texas Medical Board. While in private practice he served as Chief of Family Medicine, Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Board for Doctors Hospital, and Chief of Family Hospital at Mercy Hospital, now Laredo Medical Center. He is married with two children and enjoys traveling with his wife, being outdoors, reading and writing about leadership and listening to music.
